Health Insurance for Freelancers in North Carolina: 2026 Guide
North Carolina expanded Medicaid in 2023, which changed the picture for lower-income independents.
North Carolina expanded Medicaid in December 2023, which closed the coverage gap that still exists in neighbouring states. If your self-employment income is modest, check Medicaid eligibility before you shop for anything.
Three routes, in order
Check Medicaid first. If you are over the threshold, check HealthCare.gov for a subsidy. Only if both come up short does it make sense to look at privately arranged group plans, and at that point flat pricing becomes the main argument for them.
Where flat pricing helps
The marketplace can charge a 60 year old three times what it charges a 21 year old for the same coverage. Group plans through Benefit Airship do not rate by age at all, so the gap between the two options widens the older you are. For a family, MVP is $679 a month and Silver 3.2 is $2,199, and neither number moves with anyone's birthday.
Check your hospital system
North Carolina care is dominated by a handful of large systems, and network participation is the thing that will actually affect you. Search the Cigna PPO directory and the PHCS backup directory for your own providers before enrolling, and confirm the network with Benefit Airship directly if a particular hospital matters to you.
