Do You Qualify for a Group Health Plan as a Business of One?

The eligibility rules are simpler than most people expect, and for these plans there is no health questionnaire.

The phrase working owner just means someone who owns and works in their own business, often with no other employees. It matters because traditional small-group insurance usually wants at least two people on the payroll.

Who can enroll

Benefit Airship states that anyone in the United States can enroll: individuals, families, and employees of a company that sets up a group. There are no medical exams and no health questionnaire at sign-up, and your age does not change the price.

In practice that covers freelancers, 1099 contractors, gig workers, consultants, single-member LLCs, and people between jobs. You do not need employees. You do not need to prove a minimum income.

What you should check instead

Since eligibility is rarely the obstacle, spend your effort on the things that are. Confirm your doctor is in the Cigna network, or the PHCS backup network. Check that any medication you take regularly is covered rather than discounted. And read the term: the medical plans run for twelve months, and cancelling early triggers a twenty-four month wait before you can enroll again.

Those three checks matter far more than whether you technically qualify.
